Key factors Google uses to rank sites

The algorithm that Google uses to rank sites takes into account more than 50 different factors. Not all of them are the same weight, though. So what are the most important criteria Google uses to rank web pages? This is a list given below.

  1. Pagerank

Each site is assigned a Page Rank (PR) number from zero to ten, while Yahoo and Google are ten, and new domains without links are zero. The higher the number, the easier it is to rank any keyword. Page rank is calculated using a complex formula that few people can understand except Google’s engineers. The basic rule of thumb for increasing Page rank is to receive links from other high PR sites and limit the number of links to other sites.

  1. Inbound links

The quantity and, more importantly, the quality of the links is an important factor. Google is looking for sites that have a natural link popularity. This means that there are a large number of sites that link to more than just one type, such as social bookmarks or blogs. Link text is also important. If all incoming links have the same keyword, this is a red flag, which is likely to hurt more than the rating. Relevance of links is also important. The link is relevant if it comes from another site of the same topic. Finally, there is a link growth rate. What Google loves to see is a combination of slow link growth from a variety of different relevant sites and changing link text.

  1. Page titles

This is the most important part of the page that the algorithm looks at. It is important to choose headings with keywords for each page.

  1. Keyword Density

The number of times a keyword appears on this page helps tell the search engine what it is about. If keywords are used too many times, then this is a sign of spam on Google and will actually damage the ranking of sites. A good idea is to keep your keyword density lower and use related keywords instead. This is called covert semantic indexing (lsi), and Google prefers sites that use it.

  1. Domain age

Actual domain age may be friend or foe for search engine optimization. Ranking new domains is very difficult, while domains older than two years are much simpler. This is because older domains trust more.

While meta tags were also the five factors mentioned above, these are the main reasons why certain sites often appear on the first page of results on Google.
